Meet Evelyne Mwandia, Executive Director of Start a Library Trust and 2023 Gratitude Network Fellow.
In Kenya, 50% of children graduate from primary school without being able to read with comprehension. Evelyne started Start a Library Trust in 2022 to change that, with a model built on three things:
📖 Access: Libraries at school and at home, so children can read for pleasure, not just for exams. 🍎 Capacity: Equipping educators, parents, and school leaders, and building a reading culture within schools. ✍️ Application: Children write their own stories, which are published, and apply what they’ve learned from reading to their education.
Today, with a team of just 5 staff, Start a Library Trust serves 1.5 million children across 326 libraries. 💛

We’re grateful to our keynote speaker, Genein Letford of Brainolicious Adventures and Lyrics ‘N Leadership Institute for Brain Health, for opening our eyes to the power of brain capital. Genein reminded us that brain health matters for the children we serve and for our own minds as leaders.
🌍 A Journey of Gratitude: Sometimes the most powerful classroom is a playing field.
Meet Enouce Ndeche , Executive Director of Vijana Amani Pamoja and a 2023 Gratitude Network Fellow. ✨
Vijana Amani Pamoja translates to “Youth, Peace, Together.” Since 2003, the organization has used sports as a tool for social and economic development. Its programs include Skills Kenya, which builds awareness around HIV and AIDS, and Secure Futures, which supports pregnant adolescent girls and young mothers.
Each year, Skills Kenya and Secure Futures reach 4,500 students, and another 600 take part in vocational training and entrepreneurship empowerment. Through Gratitude Network, Enouce Ndeche gained fundraising skills and tactics that help fund and sustain the organization’s work.
